It was, in the city of Calcutta, that the first golf club outside the British Islands was established way back in 1829. While there were certain club championships which were being played in almost all the clubs at that time, the first truly national-level championship began in 1892 when the inaugural All-India Amateur Championship (men’s) was staged as a stroke play tournament at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. The ladies were not far behind. The Ladies All-India Amateurs started in 1906 at the Royal Calcutta golf Club with Mrs. L Walker walking away with top honors in the inaugural event. The tournament has continued without interruption except for 1918 because of World War One and a gap of 10 years from 1940-50, triggered by World War Two. The Ladies All-India Amateurs continued to be played at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. In 1957, IGU decided to rotate the event between the RCGC, The Delhi Golf Club and the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai. The prestigious event of the Ladies All-India Amateur is in its 93rd year and for the first time will be held at Kensville Golf Club. Kensville in Gujarat is an 18 hole championship golf course. The team to host this is the Ladies Committee from Bombay Presidency Golf Club. The committee members are: Ms Asha Shah, Ms Savitri Ramchandra, Ms Sanam Merchant, Ms Shikha Rajkumar, Ms Nimmi Gowrishankar, Ms Preet Sodhi, and Ms Krupali Kataria with a sub committee ofMs Mita Gowande and Ms Nidhi Oza. The team has their hands full to host the 93rd Ladies All- India Amateur from 30th January 2010 – 4th February 2010. The event will also see some foreign national’s participant as a team of players from Africa have confirmed their entry. Few of the prestigious trophies include: Ellen Mandal Cup, Mahindra Trophy, Tara Malkani Prize, PA Robinson Salver, Leslie Sawhney Salver, Agarwal International Trophy, London Pilsner Seniors, VST Juniors, Noshir Muluk Memorial Trophy Super Seniors, Billoo Sethi Challenge Trophy. “This prestigious event to be hosted in Kensville Ahmedabad should give Gujarat a permanent placement on the golfing map of India. We do hope to get a number of local entries to join the tournament and help the sport grow in Ahmedabad. This participation of the locals will encourage new upcoming talent and slowly increase the number of lady golfers in the city.” The entire committee is more than happy and awaiting to help the young players of Ahmedabad gain a new experience of golf with the other 70-80 entries for the event. --- Sanam Merchant |
